While speaking at the Goldman Sachs annual tech conference in San Francisco earlier today, Apple COO Tim Cook said the iPad will be avialable at their retail locations retail locations of select partners at the launch of the device. One of those partners that will have it at launch, they say, is Best Buy, with AT&T being an implied possibility.

“Initially it will be around places with really great assisted sales,” Cook said. “Over time it will expand.”

He also revealed that he’s had an iPad for his own personal use for the past six months, and he believes it will be very compelling when compared to a netbook.

“The experience is just absolutely incredible,” he said. “And so we’re obviously very excited about this thing and can’t wait to start shipping it.”

This is huge – I think distribution will be wide spread. See the iPod and iPod Touch. It’s sold in multiple locations from Toy R Us to Target. People will see others using it, and it will be everywhere. With the price it “almost” become an impulse purchase.

Netbooks are officially dead.
